BAHLA FORT, OMAN
Bahla Fort is a significant UNESCO site in the desert at the foot of the Jebel Akhdar Highlands, about 200klm from Muscat in the Sultanate of Oman.Dating from the 12th Century and built by the Banu Nebhan Tribe. Built in 3 distinct phases, namely Al–Qasabah, Bait al Hadith and Bait Al–Jabal. The Fort was extensively refurbished by UNESCO. This a mystical place with a very chequered history.
I visited the site to capture the dramatic architecture of the Fort and create a unique portfolio in black and white. No other person was at the site in the early morning sun, a windless day which allowed contemplation and imagination to run freely.
The mass and form of the Fort provides an aesthetic visual structure, which has a unique perspective. The image space is deserted of humans which adds an important perspective in terms of anchoring the imagery in time of when the Fort was active, somehow keeping the ghosts of the past alive within the massive walls and structure.
The imagery is shot in the perpendicular whilst accommodating detail and volume of the architecture, and is treated with sepia to aid the aging process.
